Industry: Manufacturing
Location: Pacific Northwest
Innovative Environmental and Sustainable Remediation Practices Benefits Surrounding Community
ENTACT was engaged to perform remediation services at a former sanitary landfill National Priorities List (NPL) site. The work area is approximately 2 acres in size and required the removal 23,800 cubic yards of impacted soil and more than 35,000 buried drums disposed of at the site in the early 1970s.
Scope of work included the construction of a 200-foot-by-350-foot container management area pad; design and installation of a steel sheet pile wall to protect an existing soil-cement-bentonite slurry wall; construction and operation of a water treatment system; construction and relocation of a 180-foot-by-126-foot tension fabric temporary structure equipped with a 100,000-ACFM air handling system; excavation and removal of 60,000 cubic yards of clean and impacted soils; and off-site transportation and disposal of waste materials.
Sustainable remediation practices
- Installed over 18,000 square feet of sheet pile with 20% recycled material
- Recycled 229 tons of concrete, 10 tons of steel, 1,000 tons of asphalt, and repurposed 329 tons of concrete ballast
- Treated and reused 125,000 gallons of contact water for dust suppression
- 43% of materials and services purchased were located within 50 minutes of the project site
