Remediation of Impacted River Sediment Completed in 3.5 Months

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy contracted with White Lake Dock & Dredging, Inc. (WLDD), a division of ENTACT, LLC, to provide dredging and remedial capping services in the Manistique River.

This project involved dredging 42,000 cubic yards of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) impacted sediment, of which 1,100 cubic yards were Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) hazardous material. After the dredging operations, WLDD installed 12,000 cubic yards of granulated activated carbon (GAC)-sand blended material to form an activated carbon remedial cap. All materials removed from the Area of Concern (AOC) were impacted with PCBs.

Materials were dewatered and solidified with Portland cement and other reagents in lined dewatering pits and disposed of at a landfill. All TSCA hazardous waste was routed to a permitted out-of-state landfill. Over 2,000 truckloads of material were disposed of over 3.5 months.
