River restoration from metal-impacted sediments
ENTACT dredged 32,000 cubic yards of metals-impacted sediment from four areas of the Lower Genesee River, including two cattail wetland marshes. The project required precise mechanical dredging, turbidity controls, dewatering and solidification, and restoration within a constrained footprint at an active wastewater treatment facility. This project was also recognized by the EPA with a National Notable Achievement Award. By project completion, ENTACT had:
- Mechanically dredged 32,000 cubic yards of soft silty sand and clay
- Managed variable river currents and maintained the 50 NTU water quality standard using turbidity curtains and specialized dredging techniques within the wetland areas
- Dewatered and solidified dredged materials in lined pits using Portland Cement to meet landfill acceptance criteria
- Disposed of 45,000 tons of material over five months
- Coordinated trucking operations and site activities with plant operations while completing the project without a health or safety incident
- Restored two river-bottom work areas, placing 27,300 cubic yards of cap material
- Restored two wetland areas with 30,000 regional wetland plantings
- Verified cap placement using hydrographic surveys and core sampling
