MANISTEE RIVER MGP REMEDIATION

Industry: Utilities

Location: Midwest

Result: Sustainable Environment

Coordination with Multiple Companies and Government Entities Central to the Project’s Success

White Lake Dock & Dredge, Inc. (WLDD), a division of ENTACT, LLC, dredged 30,000 cubic yards of manufactured gas plant (MGP)-impacted sediment from a half-mile stretch of the Manistee River. Materials were solidified with Portland cement in lined dewatering pits before disposal at the landfill.

This project required WLDD to work and manage sheen within a narrow channel heavily trafficked by residential pleasure boats and large industrial ships. Operations required coordination with railroad and shipping companies, the United States Coast Guard, the United States Army Corps of Engineers, and the State of Michigan.

WLDD also performed several hundred yards of diver-assisted hydraulic dredging over an adjacent utility corridor. After the dredging operations were complete, over 7,000 cubic yards of various sand and aggregate materials were installed along the shores of the navigation channel.
