ENTACT Associates Publish Peer-Reviewed Paper on Subaqueous ISS in Remediation Journal

A team of technical experts from ENTACT and GEI Consultants has published the peer-reviewed paper, State of the Practice – Sub-Aqueous In-Situ Solidification for Contaminated Sediment Remediation, in Remediation Journal.

The publication synthesizes lessons learned from the planning, design, and construction of subaqueous in-situ solidification (ISS) remedies implemented across North America. As one of the first peer-reviewed papers dedicated exclusively to subaqueous ISS for contaminated sediment remediation, it provides practitioners with a practical framework for evaluating, designing, and implementing this specialized remedial technology.

Advancing Industry Knowledge Through Experience

The paper was co-authored by ENTACT Associates Rory Kilkenny, PE; Ben Gezon; Tony Moran, PE; and Jule Carr, PE, alongside GEI Consultants’ Mark Rehmsmeier, PE; David Bell, PE; David Jensen, PE; and Matthew Macenski, PE.

Rather than documenting the experience of a single organization, the publication synthesizes lessons learned from nearly every completed subaqueous in-situ solidification (ISS) sediment remediation project performed to date. Drawing on the collective experience of the consultants, contractors, and project teams that have designed and implemented these remedies (including the authors) the paper captures the current state of practice for subaqueous ISS.

The publication examines key considerations for remedy selection, engineering design, construction methodologies, quality assurance, and long-term performance while highlighting practical lessons that have emerged from real-world implementation. By integrating perspectives from project planning, engineering design, and field implementation, the paper provides practitioners with practical guidance that can be applied throughout every stage of a sediment remediation project.

As contaminated sediment remediation projects continue to grow in complexity, the paper offers environmental professionals a practical framework for evaluating when subaqueous ISS can provide an effective remedial solution.
