Challenge
Remediate a former chemical complex for mixed-use redevelopment
A 2,200-acre former chemical complex featured a number of environmental conditions that delayed the site’s redevelopment. In addition to the site’s large size, difficult field conditions challenged project objectives and demanded a partner with innovative solutions.
ENTACT performed remedial activities over a multi-year timeline, starting by developing a solution to reduce moisture levels in site ponds, trench waste and other site excavations.
ENTACT Solution
ENTACT drew upon its internal technical and treatability skills to develop a remedial solution that would reduce the site’s high moisture levels to target objectives. This process included geotechnical evaluations, soil mixing, free-draining, dewatering and reagent evaluations of source materials. To maintain an efficient schedule, we performed critical items concurrently throughout our phased, multi-year site approach.
- Blended, dried, performed solidification and removed impacted waste soil, sediment and sludge
- Constructed an on-site 53-acre corrective action management unit (CAMU)
- Placed the remediated on-site waste materials within the CAMU
- Designed and installed a steel sheet pile retaining system to excavate pyrophoric wastes, blended VOCs and PCBs up to 50 feet deep
- Installed a geosynthetic/soil cover system over the CAMU
- Installed associated storm water management features
The Results
- Removed 3.9 million cubic yards of waste soil, sediment and sludge
- Prepared the site for mixed-use redevelopment, including residential, parks and recreation
