Challenge
Treat and stabilize tar ponds soil and sediment preparing the site for community use
The Tar Ponds were filled with waste from a steel mill and coke oven, impacting the tidal estuary with impacted sediments and sludge. The governments of Canada and Nova Scotia announced a plan to clean up the site and establish Open Hearth Park, a community gathering place.
ENTACT played a key role on the project team, providing solidification/stabilization services, laying the foundation for this valuable community project.
ENTACT Solution
ENTACT developed solidification and stabilization mix designs in our treatability lab, and a successful field pilot program confirmed the recommended formula.
- Added cement in dry form to the impacted areas and performed mixing using multiple hydraulic excavators
- Constructed a lined channel to convey stormwater discharge from the city of Sydney into the harbor
- Installed a sitewide cap over the treatment areas
The Results
- Solidified and stabilized approximately 746,000 cubic yards of impacted sediment
- Following remediation, the park opened, creating a healthy, functional and beautiful community asset
