Challenge
Remediate a flash flood tributary basin contaminated with PCBs
Our client was faced with a sensitive remediation challenge – a tributary basin, adjacent to the client’s operating facility, had been contaminated with PCBs. Soil and sediment were impacted.
ENTACT worked in partnership with our client to develop a phased solution that removed the contamination and restored the river and its surroundings for the community.
ENTACT Solution
ENTACT recommended a multi-year, phased removal of the PCB-impacted sediments. We used internal resources, specialty equipment and experienced personnel to complete the job with precision.
In addition to meeting our client’s objectives, we managed and protected the site in anticipation of flood events. Planning for this unpredictability and having custom equipment built for working in saturated soils were critical to the success of this project.
- Installed pumping systems to reroute water flow away from the work area
- Segregated the PCB-impacted floodplain soils and sediment for disposal
- Installed cut-off wall in order to separate and sequence removal areas
The Results
- 3,000 linear feet of ditch line and 5,600 linear feet of creek channel remediated
- 178,500 tons of PCB-impacted sediment, clay and native material transported for offsite disposal
- Treated and filtered 4 billion gallons of water using an on-site water treatment system
