Challenge
Remediate a former waste oil site located on a shoreline
A National Priorities List Superfund Site required remediation and geotechnical construction services to remove contaminants impacting its 150 acres. The former waste oil recovery facility site included numerous above-ground storage tanks, two API separators, a large elevated sludge impoundment and a small cemetery. Bordered by a bay, the location is also near a closed waste disposal site and city landfill, and undeveloped marsh and wetlands.
ENTACT considered project scale, scope and the proximity to sensitive environments when developing a successful solution to this client challenge. Implementing a phased approach allowed us to continue construction activities during design approvals, reducing our overall timeline.
ENTACT Solution
In addition to our phased approach, ENTACT sequenced field activities so that critical items could be performed during solidification, consolidation and backfilling for schedule efficiency. Teamwork and seasoned field expertise made this successful solution possible.
- Demolished above-ground tanks, buildings, process vessels, piping and other structures
- Constructed a 40-foot deep, 3,300-foot perimeter soil-bentonite slurry wall
- Installed a vacuum well-point dewatering system
- Constructed a 30-acre cell
- Completed excavation and solidification services
- Backfilled excavation areas
The Results
- Excavated 200,000 cubic yards of impacted soil and rubble
- Performed solidification of 275,000 cubic yards of subsurface source material and sludge
- Backfilled sludge pit and excavation areas with approximately 340,000 cubic yards of clean fill
- Placed more than 60,000 tons of riprap for shoreline protection along the bay
