ENTACT remediated a former Bay Area bulk fuel terminal and distribution facility.  The primary objective of the project was the excavation, stockpiling, and off site disposal of more than 205,000 tons of petroleum impacted soils via rail gondolas. Additional scope included the excavation, stockpiling and reuse of over 75,000 cubic yards of overburden; on-site crushing and reuse of more than 30,000 tons of concrete; demolition of 75,000 square feet of on-site structures; installation of an 8-inch water line; cleaning and removal or in-place abandonment of site wide underground piping (including 5 miles of piping beneath city streets); management of recovered petroleum products; restoration of city streets; and final site backfill and restoration. Excavation depths of up to 21 feet below grade, in conjunction with the site’s close proximity to the Bay, necessitated the installation of a perimeter dewatering system (comprised of sixty-four (64) temporary dewatering wells and six (6) mobile sumps) to minimize ground water infiltration.  A portable water treatment system was used to treat recovered water bearing suspended solids and petroleum hydrocarbons at rates of up to 1,000 gallons per minute.  By project completion, over 48 million gallons of water had been collected, treated and discharged to the sanitary sewer.

NPL Site

Earthwork Excavation
  • Management and consolidation of all on-site debris, decontamination and demolition of remaining smelter buildings
  • Re-graded 1.3 million cy of slag and soil (slag piles as large as 8.5 acres and up to 50 feet tall)
  • Removal of impacted soil and sediment from the Jordan River riparian areas
  • 185-acre soil cover system
  • Property prepared for mixed-use redevelopment

ENTACT completed remedial action at a National Priorities List (NPL) smelter site to prepare the property for mixed-use redevelopment.  The scope of work included management and consolidation of all on-site debris; decontamination and demolition of remaining smelter buildings; asbestos abatement; UST removal; and the consolidation and re-grading of 1.3 million cubic yards of smelter slag and impacted soil staged in piles with footprints as large as 8.5 acres and heights of up to 50 feet.  ENTACT was also responsible for the removal of impacted soil and sediment from riparian areas adjacent to the site; and construction of a 185-acre soil cover system over the entire site.
